WILLARD SCOTT TO BROADCAST LIVE FROM MILL MOUNTAIN

Willard Scott, the ebullent weatherman for NBC's "Today" show, will give Roanoke some national television exposure Friday when he broadcasts live from the top of Mill Mountain.

The weather segments of the show are scheduled for 7:10, 7:40, 8:10 and 8:40 a.m. Among the topics Scott will discuss for the network audience is this weekend's Miss Virginia pageant. The reigning Miss Virginia, Tami Elliott will make an appearance on the show.

WSLS is airing the Miss Virginia pageant on Saturday night.

Scott made a live appearance in Martinsville last August and last appeared in Roanoke in November 1987 at the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts. Both of those appearances, as well as Friday's, were arranged by the local NBC affiliate, WSLS (Channel 10).

Channel 10 General Manager Jim Deschepper said the station asked the network to schedule Scott for an appearance in the Roanoke Valley. Scott was originally scheduled to appear at the Roanoke Valley Horse Show in June, Deschepper said, but was forced to postpone the appearance until now.

A "Today" show spokeswoman said that Scott makes about 200 appearances per year on behalf of the show.

Early risers are invited to come watch the proceedings, Deschepper said.
