THREE-CAR WRECK ON VIRGINIA 114 CAUSES INJURIES

Five men were injured, one seriously, in a three-car wreck partially caused by the slick surface on Virginia 114 early Wednesday.

Ricky Lee Maupin, 28, of Route 1, Christiansburg, was in serious condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital following surgery for multiple fractures to his legs and face, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said Maupin was driving east near Virginia 661 in Montgomery County when he crossed the center line and struck a car being driven in the opposite direction by Gregory E. Hypes, 22, of Blacksburg.

Police said Hypes tried to stop but his brakes locked up and he skidded into Maupin's car.

A third car, driven by Eddie P. Sikes, 19, of Christiansburg, skidded on the wet road and slammed into the rear of Hypes' car. Sikes, Hypes and one passenger each were taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital, treated for minor injuries and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Maupin was charged with reckless driving and Sikes was charged with driving without a license, police said.
