ROANOKE VICE OFFICER FACES DUI CHARGE

The head of the Roanoke Police Department vice bureau has been charged with reckless and drunken driving, state police said Wednesday.

Lt. George W. Sutherland, 47, was stopped about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 581 near the Liberty Road overpass, according to Lt. L.R. Jessup of the Virginia State Police.

Police said Sutherland is accused of going 80 mph in a 55 mph zone. Trooper C.D. Jessee spotted the speeding southbound car on radar and made the arrest, Jessup said.

Sutherland was cooperative with authorities and did not resist a blood alcohol test.

Sutherland has been with the police department for more than 20 years. He is the second high-ranking Roanoke police officer to be charged this year with drunken driving.

In May, Lt. John S. Barrett, head of the Roanoke Police Academy, was convicted of driving drunk in Roanoke County on March 17.

He received a $100 fine, a suspended 30-day jail sentence and was ordered to attend alcohol safety classes - a standard punishment for first-time offenders. Barrett was allowed to keep his position in the department after the matter was handled internally.
