MEASURE ALLOWS VICTIMS OF AIDS TO HANDLE FOOD

Owners of restaurants, packing companies and other food businesses should be allowed to reassign AIDS-infected workers only if medical evidence shows a need, the Senate says.

By a 99-1 vote Wednesday, senators decided that any attempt to exclude AIDS-infected workers from the full protection of the Americans With Disabilities Act would have to depend on scientific evidence, not public fears.

House and Senate negotiators were meeting today to craft a compromise of the disabilities bills passed by the two chambers. The non-binding Senate vote called on its bargainers to include the new language in the final legislation.

Health and Human Services Secretary Louis Sullivan has said no evidence exists for removing AIDS-infected people from food-handling jobs.
