ADDITIONAL SAND OK'D FOR BEACH

City Council has approved a sand replenishment project that will more than double the width of a 3,700-foot stretch of Buckroe Beach.

The project approved Wednesday, which will cost $962,820 and be funded by the city and the state, will be the most comprehensive sand replenishment ever at Buckroe Beach, Hampton Parks Director Thomas H. Daniel said.

Unlike past replenishment efforts in which sand was brought by truck from inland borrow pits, this program will dredge 224,000 cubic yards of sand from the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay and pump it on shore.

Natural forces eventually will return the sand to the bay, but this year's effort should last 10 years, barring any major storms or hurricanes, Daniel said.
