BRIDGE CLOSED BY TRUCK WRECK

The Virginia 33 bridge over the Mattaponi River, a span that joins West Point and King and Queen County, will be closed for at least two weeks because of damage caused by a truck wreck, authorities said.

A truck carrying a piece of heavy machinery was too tall and struck an overhead truss on the 2,800-foot span about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Don Wagner, a resident engineer for the state Transportation Department.

No injuries were reported.

The closest upriver crossing of the Mattaponi is at Walkerton. The closest downriver crossing of the York River is U.S. 17 at Gloucester Point.
