AIRPORT GETS GRANT TO UPGRADE CARGO OPERATIONS

The Roanoke Regional Airport has received a $927,000 federal grant to acquire land for the improvement of air cargo operations.

The money will be used for the purchase of about eight acres near the east-west runway and Airport Road.

The master plan for the airport calls for new air cargo facilities to be developed to replace the scattered operations that exist now.

City Manager Robert Herbert, chairman of the Regional Airport Commission, said today the the airport wants to buy the land to protect it for airport use because "land is being developed so fast that we thought it best to try to acquire it now," he said.
