LIGHTNING VICTIM HOME FROM HOSPITAL

A Pulaski County man was released late Wednesday from Montgomery Regional Hospital, a day after he was struck by lightning on the Blacksburg municipal golf course.

David Martin Dalton, 33, of the New River section of Pulaski County, had finished the second hole when it started raining. He was walking back to the clubhouse about 6:15 p.m., Blacksburg Capt. W.H. Brown said.

Lightning struck his umbrella, shattering its metal shaft and knocking Dalton to the ground.

When rescue crews arrived, Dalton was conscious but had no feeling in his feet and legs and was unable to move them, Brown said.

He regained feeling later at the hospital. He had been in guarded condition, but recovered through the day and was able to be released late Wednesday afternoon.

Dalton is an employee at Hubbell Lighting Inc. in Christiansburg, Brown said.
