Fisher-Price of East Aurora, N.Y., a division of Quaker Oats Co., has agreed to place warnings on packages that its Little People figures present a choking hazard to children, the New York state attorney general said recently.

The toy have been linked to the choking deaths of at least five children nationwide and left one child severely brain damaged, Attorney General Robert Abrams said.

The company agreed to place labels on all packages containing Little People beginning next month and print warnings directly onto packages by next year.

The company's packages already bear a warning that the product is not intended for children who still put objects in their mouths, but the new labels will warn consumers about the choking hazard.

The figures, hollow and often less than one inch in diameter, are marketed for children aged 2 to 6 years. The toys meet federal safety guidelines.
