RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. ROBERT M. CHAPMAN, former pastor of Epworth United Methodist Church who became an activist for the closing of the Kim-Stan landfill in Selma, is the new minister of Fairview United Methodist Church off Melrose Avenue Northwest. Following graduation from Virginia Wesleyan College, Chapman, 33, worked as an audio-visual technician.

Chapman also is a graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, where he met his wife, Julie. Both have been engaged in clown ministry and in the Emmaus Walk spiritual growth movement. Chapman has been a hospital chaplaincy intern and on the staff of a Falls Church congregation. He had a study leave in Israel in January. The couple has a daughter, Kathleen, 2.

\ THE REV. BRADFORD L. PHILLIPS has become pastor at Huntington Court United Methodist Church. Phillips, 38, had been pastor at Providence Church near Yorktown for four years. A former teacher, Phillips took theological education at Eastern Mennonite Seminary where he also served a church. His wife, Bonnie Kane Phillips, has directed childrens' choirs. Clown ministry, Scouting and nursing home visitation are among Phillips' other interests. The family includes James, 12, and David, 8.

\ PATRIOTIC MUSIC performed by members of the several Roanoke Valley Churches of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is scheduled Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The free concert will be at the Mormon chapel at 6311 Wayburn Drive, Salem. Call 774-7099 for more information.

\ SINGERS are needed for an Agape Jubilee Festival on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. at Victory Stadium. The gospel music program will benefit Total Action Against Poverty's efforts to re-establish its headquarters after a fire. For more information, call 981-2889 or 342-5058. The choral program is directed by the Rev. Dwight O. Steele and Jimmy Cook.

\ HUNTINGTON COURT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH will hold vacation Bible school July 16-20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. "Ways Bible people lived" is the theme. Classes will be held for ages 3 through grade six. An adult class - the study of Philippians - will be taught by The Rev. Brad Phillips. A children's carnival will be held on the lawn on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. Activities include games, cartoons and a hot dog and ice cream supper.
