THERE SHE IS: The Miss Virginia Pageant is under way at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium. Competition continues tonight at 8 and concludes Saturday night at 9.

MARCH: Drum Corps over Salem, a loud, colorful display of dancing, marching and music, returns to Salem stadium Wednesday night at 7:30.

The Cadets of Bergen County, N.J., will defend their crown against five other corps from four states - North Carolina, Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

The Cadets, by the way, are the nation's oldest and most honored drum and bugle corps.

Reserved seat tickets are $10, general admission $8. Children age 12 and under get in for half-price. For information, call 375-3004.

\ JOY OF SINGING: The U.S. National Chorus, a Stan Kingma enterprise, will perform at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium Sunday night at 7:30.

The 76 adults and young adults are on their way to a two-week singing tour of Europe and this is their bon voyage concert. They will be joined by the Virginia Gentlemen barbershop chorus and, if all goes as planned, the Music for Americans chorus that sings at Victory Stadium each July 4.

The show is sponsored by the Vinton Breakfast Lions Club. Tickets are $7. They can be reserved by calling 342-0400.

The chorus's repertoire has included such works as Bruckner's "Ave Maria" and "Music of the Night" from "The Phantom of the Opera."

\ TO DO: "Magic To Do" is the latest offering from Theatre B at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke. It's a revue of songs from the Broadway scores of Stephen Schwartz.

His works have included "Godspell," "Pippin" and "The Baker's Wife."

The play runs through Aug. 5.Tickets are $9. More information is available at 342-5740.

\ PLUCKER: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones will play Sunday night at 8 at Lime Kiln Arts near Lexington.

Fleck has been called the Paganini, or the Jimi Hendrix, of the five-string banjo.

Wednesday night, the Brother Boys, who sing hillbilly harmonies, and harmonica expert Peter "Madcat" Ruth will perform on the lawn at the Kiln.

\ WORTHY CAUSE: Gabriel's Psaltery, the coffee house of Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg, will feature an international mix of performers Sunday night at 7:30 in a benefit for the New River Valley Hospice.

Performers will include The Riverboat Ramblers Dixieland Band, Ibou's Senegal Band and Dancers, Trillium, Donovan and Eli and Eric Neumann.

\ OUTSIDE: Brown Bag Arts continues at Crestar Plaza in Roanoke today with Lowe & Stowe Productions, an African music and dance performance. It starts at 12:15 p.m. and it is absolutely free.

\ LAST CHANCE: The Salem Fair closes Sunday evening at 7. Rides, games, racing pigs, weight-lifting frogs and other attractions make it something to see.
