BASSETT SELECTS NEW COACH

Hugh Tucker, an assistant football coach at Bassett High for the past four years, was selected Thursday as the new head coach of the Bengals.

Tucker's selection was approved Thursday morning in a meeting of the Henry County School Board, said Leon Gunter, Bassett's principal.

Gunter said that, before coming to Bassett, Tucker coached as an assistant for 12 years at Fieldale-Collinsville.

Tucker has been employed by the Henry County school system for 16 years, Gunter said, and works in Bassett's alternative education program for potential dropouts and other students at risk.

Tucker played high school football at William Byrd in Vinton, went to VMI for two years and finished his collegiate football career at Carlson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Tucker replaces Jerry Cannaday, who resigned in June and later accepted a job as an assistant football coach at Franklin County High. - Staff report
