LAWMAKERS TRY TO HALT SUBMARINE BUILDING

Lawmakers from the Northeast are trying to stop Newport News Shipbuilding from making Navy submarines.

The Connecticut and Rhode Island congressional delegations sent a letter to Defense Secretary Dick Cheney supporting a plan to make Electric Boat, a Groton, Conn., shipbuilder, the sole maker of Seawolf submarines.

Virginia lawmakers and local shipyard workers have called Newport News' break in contract negotiations with the Navy unfavorable because the Newport News yard has been completely dependent on Navy contracts for shipbuilding for 10 years.
