THE PEOPLE COLUMN

Jon Lovitz, the saturnine "Saturday Night Live" cast member who portrayed a pathological liar with the catch phrase "That's the ticket," is leaving the show.

Lovitz joined the show in 1985 and had a five-year contract as a member of the "SNL" company, NBC announced Wednesday.

His other comic bits included an impression of playwright Harvey Fierstein as an affection-starved talk show host, and himself, jovially urging viewers to "Get to know me!"

NBC said Lovitz could be reached only through his Los Angeles-based manager, Brad Gray, who did not return phone calls from the Associated Press.

Redd Foxx's jewelry, including a diamond and gold watch given to him by Elvis Presley, will be auctioned by the Internal Revenue Service.

The comedian, who starred as a junk man in the 1970s TV series "Sanford and Son," owes the government $2.9 million in taxes and penalties, according to the IRS.

Seventy-six pieces of jewelry will be sold at the auction, scheduled for July 23 at IRS headquarters in Las Vegas, said auctioneer Robert Deiro. The IRS auctioned eight of Foxx's cars in May, raising $49,555.

Armand Hammer, chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corp., is being sued for $700 million by the heir to the estate of his wife, claiming at least a half interest in Hammer's art collection.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles state court, alleges fraud, legal malpractice and financial misconduct. It contends Hammer and a law firm representing the industrialist repeatedly deceived Frances Hammer about her ownership rights to Hammer's assets.

The lawsuit was filed by Robert Weiss of Los Angeles, husband of Joan Weiss, a niece of Frances Hammer and sole heir to her estate. Frances Hammer died in December after 33 years of marriage.

Pearl Bailey is feeling well after surgery for replacement of an arthritic left knee, her surgeon says.

The 72-year-old singer and actress received a metal and plastic joint Wednesday at Pennsylvania Hospital in her native Philadelphia.
