ROCKY MOUNT SEEKS GRANT TO PLAN FACE LIFT

Downtown revitalization, one of the main issues in recent municipal elections, has gotten off the ground.

On July 9, Town Council authorized Town Manager Mark Henne to apply for a $25,000 planning grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

Henne said the grant could be used to hire a consultant to draw up architectural renderings and a plan of action.

Competition will be keen for the grant money, which also is used for water, sewer and housing projects. "We're probably going to have a hard time," Henne said.

Revitalization of Rocky Mount's downtown business district became a major issue in mayoral and council elections held this spring.

In other action, Town Council voted 4-2 to reject a proposal by Bryan S. Law to operate a used-car business at 379 W. Franklin St.
