BUY A FEW BEST FRIENDS THIS WEEKEND

When you need an answer, you turn to them.

When you need a good laugh or a good cry, you turn to them.

When you just need to get away from it all for a day, you turn to them.

They're your best friends ant the more you use them, the better they get.

They are books, of course.

The Lamplighters will be selling used books today and Saturday at the Radford Public Library. These volunteer supporters of the library hope to raise funds for some worthwhile projects, such as the summer reading program for children.

The Lamplighters welcome your book donations, too.

The sale will be held 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

After you buy a book, buy the biggest red apple you can find and seek out a shady tree. Then introduce yourself to a new friend.

\ SETTLER'S SUPPER:

\ Are you tired of July's hamburger-hotdog fare? Has cole slaw got you down? Wish you had never seen a baked bean?

What you need is a nice cool dish of smearcase.

Now that's a new word to add to your Scrabble collection.

From the German schmieren (meaning "to spread") and kase (cheese), smearcase is cottage cheese.

The Wilderness Road Regional Museum will serve smearcase at the 10th annual Colonial Dinner on Saturday. Also on the buffet you will find roast beef au jus, chicken casserole, fresh green beans, peas and carrots and all the delicious treasures from the garden - home-grown tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and watermelon.

The cooks also will serve homemade bread, country butter, pickles, relishes and peach cobbler. Best of all, fragrant flowers, candlelight and Moira Baker's melodious folk singing will provide the right setting for such a feast.

Reservations are a must and may be made for 5, 6:30 or 8 p.m. The cost is $12.50 for adults and $6.50 for children under 12. To reserve a seat, call Ann Bailey at 382-2298, Daisy Williams at 674-5888, Geraldine Mathews at 980-7499 or Lloyd Mathews at 674-4275. You also may call the museum, 674-4835.

The Wilderness Road Regional Museum is in the former K.B. Alexander House, now an aquisition of the New River Historical Society.

The museum is in Newbern in Pulaski County. To get there from I-81, take Exit 32 and follow the brown signs.

\ AND WE'LL HAVE FUN, FUN, FUN...Saturday at the Radford Riverfest in Bisset Park.

Art and craft displays, food booths and bluegrass music by Olen Smythers and John Viers will be on tap throughout the day.

Events begin with a bang at 7:30 a.m. when participants in the annual Pedal, Paddle, Splash and Dash Quadrathlon take a flying leap. The event, sponsored by the Wellness and Fitness Center of the New River Valley, consists of swimming, biking, running and canoeing. It's a challenging competition for men and women.

The Council for Community Enrichment will have water activities for kids of all ages, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The Great American Outdoor Barbecue Contest put on by Main Street Radford will commence at 10 a.m. Local barbecue barons will be sending out those tantalizing smells until 3 p.m., when the cooking champions are selected.

The New River should be the site of some lively activity noon - 2 p.m. while the rafting race goes on. The Radford Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event.

Announcers from radio station 1260-J and Rock 105 will be there all day with live remotes.
