WYTHE LANDFILL SITE CAUSES WORRY

Almost 200 people packed a hot gymnasium earlier this week at Max Meadows Elementary School to voice their concerns and complaints regarding the location of a joint landfill in the eastern end of Wythe County.

County Administrator Bill Branson assured the somewhat vocal crowd there would be bo out-of-state garbage accepted at the joint landfill.

"The boards of supervisors of Wythe and Bland Counties, and the towns councils of Wytheville and Rural Retreat have agreed to take only the trash generated by their four localities," Branson said.

Branson also told the crowd that although Pulaski has announced its concern over the possibility of the joint landfill contaminating the town of Pulaski's water supply at Gatewood Reservoir, Pulaski officials have not indicated that it is a major concern.

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to appropriate $20,000 for core drilling on the 1,534-acre site in Max Meadows, the No. 1 one choice for the landfill's location. Acquisition of the site will cost the four localities $700,000.
