Major Joseph F. Kent, Jr., retired United States Air Force and international airlines Captain, of Richmond, died Thursday, July 12, 1990, after a long illness. He is survived by his devoted wife, Carolyn Treakle Kent; one son, Joseph F. Kent, III, Richmond; two daughters, Mrs. Kemper (Susan) Smith, Richmond; Dr. Marijo G. Kent, London, England; one stepson, Captain Dennis Jorgenson, Stone Mountain, Ga.; three grandsons, Kemper, Jr., and Kent Smith, both of Richmond; Patrick First, London, England; one granddaughter, Rebecca Smith, Richmond. Major Kent, a 1939 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, and the youngest lieutenant in the United States Army Air Force at age 18, served his country in six major conflicts over a 20 year span, under the U.S. flag, the United Nations, the British and French governments and the Catholic Church. During World War II, he served his country in the Pacific flying 66 combat missions. He also served during the Korean War, Vietnam, the Berlin Airlift and the Bay of Pigs during the Cuban Crisis. During 1951-52, Major Kent served as a military advisor to King Siud of Saudi Arabia as well as serving for five years as a TWA Captain and Instructor. His career as an Airline Captain with TWA, Sudflug, Lufthanfa and other airline carriers took him to all corners of the world, logging over 18,000 hours before retiring in 1974. Major Kent was a former member of the Flying Thunderbirds, a Colonel of the Confederate Air Force, as well as an Exchange Officer of the Royal British Air Force. His awards and medals of commendations for his patriotism, bravery and excellence were many. A memorial service will be held at the Bennett Funeral Home West, 11020 Broad Street Rd., Richmond, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Virginia Section, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Va. 23060, or the Richmond Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association, 603 Guenevere Court, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.
