The Carpenters Union on Friday won a decertification election at Concrete Pipe and Products Co. in Roanoke, 23-12. A group of union members had petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to decertify the union, which has represented employees for three years. The vote "proves the [union] represent[s] the group well," said Larry Wyatt, a union representative.
The Patrick Henry Hotel has resumed serving breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. The hotel's food service is preparing the meal, which includes a breakfast bar and full menu, said Linda Copenhaver, the Patrick Henry's spokeswoman. She said the Patrick Henry is still seeking an operator to replace Winslows restaurant, which closed last month.
Manufacturing activity in Virginia dropped 1.2 percent in the first quarter after seven consecutive quarters of growth, according to an index compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Declines in factory employment and in electricity consumption in factories were cited.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has announced that its Danville plant will have a partial shutdown beginning Aug. 6. Plant manager Ed Steffey said Thursday that "sluggish market conditions and a reduced demand for medium radial truck tires" require the plant to adjust production schedules. About 70 percent of the plant's 2,200 hourly and salaried employees will be affected.
