The Knicks have 15 days to match the offer for the 6-foot-7, 190-pounder, a restricted free agent who averaged 12.9 points for New York during the 1989-90 NBA season.
Allan Bristow, vice president of basketball operations for the Hornets and a former Virginia Tech star, did not reveal terms of the contract, but a source involved in the negotiations said Newman would receive $5 million over four years.
"We're serious about Johnny Newman, and we're serious about improving our ballclub by getting [top] players," Bristow said at a news conference.
Newman, 26, signed with the Knicks as a free agent in 1987. He played his college ball at Richmond, where he finished as the school's all-time leading scorer, with 2,383 points. - Associated Press, New York Times
