BODY FOUND IN N.C. WAS DANVILLE MAN

The body of a man found Wednesday afternoon has been identified as that of a 67-year-old Danville, Va., man reported missing on Monday.

Based on information and fingerprints from Danville authorities, the body was identified as that of Lester Irby Simpkins, said Sgt. Susan McCrimmon of the Moore County (N.C.) Sheriff's Department.

Simpkins' body was found around 2 p.m. Wednesday near a railroad overpass just south of Vass. No wallet or identifying information was found on the body, but a hat found nearby led authorities to Danville, McCrimmon said. The name of a Danville business was printed on the hat.

Simpkins was last seen in Danville July 7, and was reported missing Monday.

The cause and time of death had not been determined, McCrimmon said, adding that because of the condition of the body when found, "we may not ever be able to determine it."
