Tom Cruise stole the thunder of his Hollywood peers by getting People magazine's annual Sexiest Man Alive award Friday.

Cruise's role in the movie "Days of Thunder" made him an all-American "hot-rod hero," said the magazine, announcing its sixth annual determination of the world's most desirable male.

The sexiest thing about Cruise? "His eyes," said Valeria Golino, his "Rain Man" co-star. "Not their color. His regard - the way he looks with them. They're very alive."

He's also "the boy next door as daredevil," the magazine said, citing his delight in race-car driving and skydiving.

David Bowie, the British rock star, interrupted his concert to take up the cause of the rap group 2 Live Crew and its right to produce and perform its music.

"I've been listening to the album by 2 Live Crew," he said Thursday night after stopping in the middle of the song, "Young Americans."

"It's not the best album that's ever been made, but when I heard they banned it, I went out and bought it," Bowie said.

"Freedom of thought, freedom of speech - it's one of the most important things we have," he said to cheers from the capacity crowd at the Spectrum. "What's happening is the thin end of a very fat wedge."

Authorities arrested members of 2 Live Crew in Florida recently after a federal judge in Fort Lauderdale declared the group's lyrics obscene.

Princess Diana's appearance at the 16th International Congress for the Family in Brighton, England, Diana was interrupted Thursday by gay rights protesters who climbed onto a stage beside her and demanded the right to raise children in alternative environments.

Many of the 2,000 delegates jeered and shouted "shame" as the four women and one man marched across the stage. The princess blushed but sat calmly, looking composed.

The protesters carried pink placards spelling out the message: "Lesbian mothers are not pretending."

"The delegates to this congress are trying to make people believe that lesbian mothers and gay men looking after children are not real families but are pretend family groups," said protest leader Danielle Ahrens, 21.

"We are not pretending and we have no lesser values than any other family."

The princess's decision to open the four-day congress, which strongly opposes abortion, was criticized by family planning groups. In her speech, she cautioned delegates: "In all your deliberations you should remember that the very idea of the human family has many different definitions."

Ted Turner says the United States should make friends with Fidel Castro.

The Cable News Network owner responded Thursday to media critics' conclusions that his interview with the Cuban leader, televised last month on CNN, was a fluff piece. Turner said he never intended it to be hard-hitting journalism.

"I just asked the questions. I didn't grill him. I've been trying to build bridges all over the world," Turner said. "I think we could really be friends with the Cubans and Castro."

Turner's remarks came during a question-and-answer session in Los Angeles with reporters at an annual television network media tour sponsored by the networks.
