WE HADN'T heard that Americans are getting smaller. But The Wall Street Journal reports that many airlines have told aircraft manufacturers to shrink seat width from 22 inches to 19, and leg room between seat rows from 34 inches to 31.

Three inches here, three inches there, and pretty soon you're talking about space for another passenger. Meantime, there's no indication ticket prices will shrink.

JERRY FALWELL has fallen off the wagon. A few months after swearing off politics and disbanding the Moral Majority, the Lynchburg pastor has endorsed Jesse Helms' re-election to the U.S. Senate - and lent his name to a fund-raising effort.
