MURPHY, JOHN M.

\ John Marshall Murphy, age 81, of Roanoke and Craig County, died suddenly Friday, July 13, 1990. He was a 1933 graduate of V.P.I. with a degree in Electrical Engineering where he played on the Varsity Football Team. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and then founded his electrical contracting business--The J.M. Murphy Company, Inc.--which he operated until his retirement. He was State Treasurer for many years of the National Electrical Contractors Association and active in various other trade and business activities. Membership was held in the Golden Hokie Club, Roanoke Country Club and the Shenandoah Club. He was a breeder of registered Aberdeen Angus cattle and member of the Board of the Roanoke Valley Angus Association. Surviving are his wife, Katherine Brooks Murphy; brothers and sisters, Arthur Murphy, Crawford Murphy and Elizabeth Bogart, all of Sevierville, Tenn.; Ruth Robinson and Mary Adele Galleher, both of Washington, D.C.; a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 3:00 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Dr. John Wesley Newman and the Rev. James A. Hain officiating. Interment will be in the Murphy Chapel Cemetery, Sevierville, Tenn., 1:00 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. David Wetzel officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Murphy Chapel Methodist Church, Sevierville, Tenn., or Clearbook Rescue Squad, Roanoke, Va. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
