Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke cut Kevin Lynch of Minnesota and Chris Mills of Arizona to leave the Team USA roster with 14 players. The team is led by Billy Owens of Syracuse, Kenny Anderson of Georgia Tech, Todd Day of Arkansas and Alonzo Mourning of Georgetown, and also includes two of Krzyzewski's Duke players, Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley.
"The players can now focus on developing into a team, not on making the team," Krzyzewski said. "We felt we needed to get that done before we could have a good focus through the Goodwill Games."
Sixteen players returned here on July 10 for a nine-day camp. On the second day of camp, the team held its first scrimmage since its previous cut in June. Two days into the camp, the U.S. team faced a squad of Duke alumni in an exhibition.
Day sparked a second-half rally that led Team USA to a 117-106 victory over the Duke team. Mourning scored 19 points to lead the team.
Others who made the final cut are Chris Gatling of Old Dominion, Lee Mayberry of Arkansas, Mark Randall of Kansas, Chris Smith of Connecticut, Doug Smith of Missouri, Clarence Weatherspoon of Southern Mississippi and Henry Williams of North Carolina-Charlotte.
The camp at Duke will continue through Wednesday.
From Durham, the U.S. team will travel to Portland, Ore., to train with the rookie camps of the Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz through July 22. Then the team will go to Seattle for the Goodwill Games.
After Seattle, Krzyzewski must cut his roster to 12. That team will face the Soviet national team in an exhibition on Aug. 4 in Atlanta before going to the FIBA World Championships Aug. 8-19 in Buenos Aires.
Team USA is the defending world champion, having won the gold medal in 1986 in Spain.
