CARTER WINS QUADRATHLON

Robert Carter of Kingsport, Tenn., was the overall winner in the fifth annual Pedal Paddle Splash and Dash Quadrathlon on Saturday at Bissett Park.

The event, sponsored by Radford Community Hospital and the Wellness and Fitness Center of the New River Valley, features a half-mile swim, a 13 1/2-mile bike race, a 5.3-mile run and a two-mile canoe race.

Carter's time of 1 hour, 54 minutes, 39 seconds bested John Reuwer of Radford. David Ryan was third.

Roanokers dominated the Seniors division as Junius Crowgey placed first in 2:29:33, followed by Artie Levin.

Overall - 1. Robert Carter, Kingsport, Tenn., 1:54.39; 2. John Reuwer, Radford, 1:55.54; 3. David Ryan 1:59.15; 4. Eddie Sayers, Dublin, 2:03.10; 5. James Paine, Bluefield W.Va., 2:10.36;.

Seniors (60 over) - 1. Junius Crowgey, Roanoke, 2:29:33; 2. Artie Levin, Roanoke, time NA;

Men's pairs - 1. David Wright-Cliff Fitzgerald, Blacksburg, 1:52.44; 2. Paul Beckwith, Riner-Kevin Harris, Christiansburg, 1:52.45.

Mixed pairs - 1. Dan Britten-Christina Baum, Floyd, 1:52.03; 2. John Scott-Laura Varta, Radford, 2:22.21.

Four-person mixed team - 1. Phil Woods, Steve Graham, John Mabie, Kelley Mccoy, Radford, 1:54.12; 2. Robbie Epperly, Timothy Shortt, Carmen Dunford, Eleanor Workman, Pulaski, 1:58.33; 3. Don Waldron, Gareth Moore, Karen Dyer, Phil Pickett, Blacksburg, 2:08.19.
