The owners of Mammoth Onyx Cave in the Kentucky town have added to their attraction a park with an Aussie slant, and they're calling it Kentucky Down Under.
The displays include an "Outback" with kangaroos and emus, sheep-shearing demonstrations in a wool shed and a flight cage where visitors can walk right in for a closer look at Aussie birds such as lories and lorikeets.
"We've been in the cave business since 1921," said spokesman Joe Austin. And the owners are always looking for new angles and ways to increase business. In 1980, they added some buffalo "as an added attraction for people to watch while they're waiting for a cave tour."
The latest idea was spurred by "one of the owners, who is Australian," said Austin.
Admission to the park is $9 for adults, $4.50 for kids 4-11. Kentucky Down Under is open until Sept. 30. The cave is open year-round, except Christmas and New Year's Day. For information, call Kentucky Down Under at (502) 786-2634.
