\ Edwin K. Mattern, age 81, of Roanoke, died Saturday afternoon in a local hospital. Born July 18, 1909, in Washington, D.C., he was raised in Fort Myers, Fla. and graduated in 1931 with a B.S. from the Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech). Mr. Mattern came to Roanoke in 1938 as County Engineer for Roanoke County and served in World War II as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He returned to Roanoke in 1946 and founded Mattern & Mattern Engineers, which in 1953 became Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Architects Engineers. Mr. Mattern was a member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church; the founder and a former president of North Cross School; a former president of Cherry Hill, Inc.; a former member of the Advisory Board of the Junior League; a former member of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors; a former member of the Board of Directors of Downtown Roanoke; a former Chairman of the Board at Colonial-American National Bank (where he was also a former chief executive officer); a former Executive Vice-President at Roanoke Valley Cablevision, Inc.; a former President of the Western Foundation for the Arts & Sciences (Center in the Square); and a former member of the Regional Advisory Committee at VPI and State University. He was preceded in death by a son, Edwin K. Mattern Jr., and is survived by his wife, Nelle Tucker Mattern; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Ralph Harvey, Wichita Falls, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edwin K. (Deborah Newman) Mattern Jr., Roanoke; three grandchildren, Kristyn Tucker Harvey, Ralph Chandler Harvey, Summers Lee Mattern; a brother and sister-in-law, Guilford and Ruby Mattern, Salem; and a stepmother, Mrs. Julian E. Mattern, Fort Myers, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon Monday from South Roanoke United Methodist Church with the Rev. James A. Hain officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Burial Park. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Center in the Square or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
