Mrs. Mary Susan Shaffer, of Salem, died at her home Monday, July 16, 1990. She was the widow of Lee W. Shaffer, Sr. She was a retired teacher and administrator and spent most of her adult life as a teacher and elementary school principal. She taught in the Department of Education for both Marshall University and Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston, in their teacher training department. She was an active member of American Childhood Education International (A.C.E.I.) and was a charter and life member and silver sister of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for women educators. Since retirement she has been active in literary clubs and did volunteer work for the Roanoke Valley Red Cross. She was a member of Green Memorial United Methodist Church. She is survived by one son and his wife, Dr. Lee W. Shaffer, Jr. and Jean Fields Shaffer; three grandsons, Lee W. Shaffer, III; John V. Shaffer; William G. Shaffer; three great-grandchildren; three nephews and one niece. Her body will be taken from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel Tuesday morning to the Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston, W.Va. The family will receive friends at the Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the grave in Sunset Memorial Park, Charleston.
