BRITISH FILM ACTRESS, HITCHCOCK STAR DIES

Actress Margaret Lockwood, the beautiful brunette who starred in Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 classic "The Lady Vanishes" and reigned over Britain's film industry in the 1940s, died Sunday. She was 73.

A hospital statement said the family had asked for no other details to be released.

Other notable films included "Night Train to Munich," "The Man in Gray," and the 1945 hit "The Wicked Lady." By 1957, she had acted in more than 40 films.

In the 1940s, she was twice named biggest money-earner of British cinema.

She also enjoyed a rich stage career that continued until 1980 as Queen Alexandra in a short-lived production of "Motherdear."
