NIGHT GOGGLE FUNDING GETS MAJOR BOOST

The Senate Armed Services Committee has added $35 million to the Bush Administration's request of $62 million for funding of night-vision goggles used by military pilots operating in low light conditions. If approved by Congress, ITT's Electro-Optical Products Division in Roanoke County will have an opportunity to bid on the work, said Les Brownlee of the Senate committee.

Richard Lewis, president of the Roanoke division, said he expects the plant to get some additional night-vision goggle production after a complaint by rival Litton Industries is resolved. No additional jobs will be created but it will mean the division will operate more efficiently, he said.

The General Accounting Office is expected to rule on the Litton complaint early in August. Litton says its bid on a night-vision goggles contract was $25 million less than the winning ITT offer. - Staff report
