GOVERNOR NAMES TWO TO EDUCATION GROUP

A Blacksburg resident and a Roanoke resident were among 15 appointed by Gov. Douglas Wilder to the Monitoring and Advisory Committee. The committee is responsible for advising the secretary of education on all aspects of the Virginia Plan for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

Joyce Williams-Green of Blacksburg is a graduate of Virginia Tech, Lehman College, the City University of New York and North Carolina Central University. She is assistant provost at Virginia Tech.

Lewis Nelson of Roanoke, vice president of Sovran Bank, is a graduate of Davidson College in North Carolina. He also is a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and the Commercial Banking Management Program at Columbia University.

According to a news release from the governor's office, the primary emphases of the committee are the recruitment and retention of minority students, the recruitment and retention of additional black faculty and the "enhancement" of the "traditionally black institutions."
