SLAYER FILING PETITION TO BLOCK EXECUTION

An attorney for convicted murderer Richard T. Boggs said his client will file a petition with the Virginia Supreme Court today to block his execution, which is scheduled for Thursday night.

David Blatt, an attorney with Williams and Connolly in Washington, said Boggs' attorneys already filed a clemency request with Gov. Douglas Wilder last Wednesday.

If the Virginia Supreme Court refuses to hear Boggs' case, "We will pursue all other avenues of relief," starting with filing a petition with the U.S. District Court in Richmond, Blatt said.

Boggs, 27, was sentenced to die for killing and robbing his 87-year-old neighbor, Treeby Shaw, in January 1984 in Portsmouth.
