SYMPOSIUM TO HONOR TECH MINERALOGIST

A symposium in honor of mineralogist F. Donald Bloss, Virginia Tech's first alumni distinguished professor, will be held on campus July 22-25.

The symposium will celebrate Bloss's career as an educator, writer and former head of the geology department.

Bloss's success includes his invention of the BAR, an automatic refractometer for optical measurements; a mineral - blossite - named after him, and the publications of several textbooks in crystallography, crystal chemistry, optical crystallography and spindle-stage microscopy.

Talks and papers by some of the leading geological scientists will be presented at the Department of Geological Sciences. A banquet will be held at the Blacksburg Marriott.

The event is open to the public. Registration costs $50 for professionals and $10 for non-professionals and students. The professional fee covers the banquet; others may attend for $25.

For information on the symposium, call 231-6521.
