SUPERVISORS RAISE FEES FOR COURT COSTS

There will be an increase in court costs in Floyd County after action taken Monday by the Board of Supervisors.

Supervisors imposed a $2 fee on traffic and criminal cases heard in the county's General District and Circuit courts. Under a law passed by the 1990 General Assembly, localities were permitted to change this fee until June 30, 1991. The fee will be used for construction and renovation of the courthouse.

No one spoke at the public hearing on the ordinance, and the debate over the fee was brief.

"I don't think it will be all that much money," supervisors Chairman William Whitlock said. "But every little bit helps."

Supervisors also made two appointments Monday. Chris Nolen was appointed to the New River Valley Community Services Board for three years. Nolen, 20, a junior at Virginia Tech majoring in political science and history, impressed the supervisors during a 20-minute interview in open session.

"I've talked with people on the board about my age," said Nolen. "I think it will be an asset rather than a hindrance."

County Extension Agent David Gardner was selected for the Southwest Virginia Farmers Market Board.

The board voted to contribute $260 monthly to supplement operational costs of the Floyd County Recycling Center.

No action was taken on the proposed tipping fee at the county landfill or on proposed amendments to the subdivision ordinance. The tipping fee was included as a source of revenue in the budget adopted by supervisors in early June. It was to provide the county with $58,500. The Floyd-Floyd County Planning Commission gave its approval to the changes in the subdivision ordinance two months ago at a joint meeting with the supervisors.

The next Board of Supervisors meeting will be Aug. 27 - a week later than usual. The meeting was moved because it conflicted with the Local Government Officials Conference in Charlottesville.

At the next meeting there will be public hearings on a request to give the Old Church Gallery tax-exempt status and a proposal to provide free county auto licenses for volunteer fire and rescue personnel.
