2 W&L PLAYERS GET PRESEASON HONORS

Record-setting split end Craig Irons of Washington and Lee has been selected a first-team preseason Division III All-American by a football publication.

The Football Gazette team announced Tuesday also included Generals offensive lineman Rob Roberton, who received a place on the honorable-mention team. Roberton, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound senior from Poolesville (Md.) High School, was a first-team All-ODAC selection last year.

As a junior last season, Irons set W&L and Old Dominion Athletic Conference season records with 75 receptions for 1,010 yards. A two-time all-conference selection from Dallas, Irons finished 1989 ranked fifth in the nation in receiving with an average of 7.5 catches per game. He had at least eight receptions in four games, including a career-high 15 against Emory & Henry.

Irons, who attended Jesuit Prep in Dallas, is the second-leading returning receiver in NCAA Division III. He was an all-state selection in 1989 and was selected to two Division III All-America teams. He also was an all-district selection in the CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-America balloting. - Staff report
