The reported altercation involving former Del. Donald McGlothlin Sr. occurred Friday afternoon at the Buchanan County Courthouse, said UMW District 28 President Donnie Lowe. McGlothlin was defeated last fall by Jackie Stump, a UMW leader who ran a successful write-in campaign.
Lowe said several union miners on strike against contractors for Pittston Coal Group had gathered at the courthouse Friday to protest the jailing of a union member accused of throwing jackrocks. Jackrocks are tire-puncturing devices constructed of nails.
McGlothlin allegedly cursed and yelled insults at the strikers as he drove near the courthouse, Lowe said.
McGlothlin is the father of the Russell County judge who fined the union more than $60 million for misconduct during the 10-month strike against Pittston Coal Group.
