PULASKI SWIMMER IDENTIFIED AS DROWNING VICTIM

A Pulaski man who drowned Monday night in Claytor Lake had been swinging from a rope on a tree into the water, Pulaski County Sheriff Frank Conner said Tuesday.

Jessie Samuel Lane, 25, of Route 1, had been swimming about 7:15 with friends in a cove at the public boat launch near Claytor Lake State Park.

Witnesses told recue workers that after Lane jumped into the water they did not see him come back up, a rescue squad spokesman said.

Rescue divers arrived minutes later but did not find Lane's body until about 7:50 in 20 feet of water. He had been under for about 20 minutes, Conner said.

Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Lane was taken to Radford Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It was the second drowning this summer in Claytor Lake and the sixth in the New River Valley.
