CONCERNED ABOUT UNCARING AMERICANS

IT'S BEEN reported that Americans in some of our big cities are uncompassionate toward the homeless in their midst. This is of great concern to me, for Americans have always been a kind and generous people. Someone has said (and I believe it), "America is great because it is good, and when America loses its goodness, it will lose its greatness."

I'm also concerned for those who are uncaring for the poor and needy, because "if a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered" (Proverbs 21:13). ROBERT S. McCORMICK JR. LEXINGTON
