CHURCH LEAVES MANY NONPLUSED

IN THE editorial "Non-event" (July 9), your editor, perhaps without realizing it, chose exactly the right word, "nonplused," to describe the reason behind the Women's Ordination Conference fund-raising letter.

Webster defines "nonplused" as " a state in which one can say or do no more." This aptly describes the feelings of thousands of both men and women in the church as they continue efforts to call the church to justice, especially toward the many women who are called and gifted for the ordained ministry. By ignoring these voices, the church and the world are missing a lot.

The Women's Ordination Conference in Fairfax may be nonplused, but it hasn't lost its sense of humor. ADELE DELLA VALLE ROANOKE
