BANK ECONOMIST WAITS ON CONGRESS

Business activity has slowed to a near standstill and prospects for a significant change seem remote unless a viable deficit reduction plan from Congress could bring lower inflation and interest rates, according to a new economic report.

Roanoke economist Glenn Bowman, writing in Dominion Bankshares' monthly Economic Update, cited as the economy's weaknesses poor retail sales, flat disposable personal income growth, high debt, relatively high interest rates, declining housing starts and auto sales and disappointing corporate profits.
