RURAL RETREAT RAISES UTILITY TAXES TO 20

Rural Retreat Town Council voted Tuesday night to increase town utility taxes from 12 percent to 20 percent, which will add about $1.20 each to monthly electric, natural gas and telephone bills.

The revenue will pay the dumping fees set to start at the Wythe County landfill in January. The county Board of Supervisors agreed to wait that long before charging the town to give it time to come up with a way to pay the fees.

Council also named Porter Sage, Tim Litz and Larry Crigger to the Rural Retreat Lake Authority board, replacing three town-appointed members who resigned July 10 when the supervisors did not provide all the supplemental funds sought by the previous authority members.
