POET TO READ EXCERPTS FROM HIS OWN WORKS

Poet William Stafford will read from his work Aug. 3 at 8 p.m. as part of the Appalachian Center for Poets and Writers 1990 Reading and Lecture Series.

Stafford has served as poetry consultant for the Library of Congress, on the Literature Commission of the National Council of Teachers of English, and has won awards including the National Book Award, Shelley Memorial Award and American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature.

Following Stafford's reading at the J.R. "Bob" Smith Oil Co. on Commonwealth Avenue, Larry Richman - professor of English at Virginia Highlands Community College, a poet and co-founder of The Sow's Ear, a regional poetry periodical - will offer a critical response and lead the audience in a discussion.
