WARNING LABELS SOUGHT ON ALCOHOL

Television spots on alcohol are the targets of proposed legislation that would require ads to carry an advisory label - "WARNING: Drinking alcohol may become addictive," for example. Or "WARNING: Drinking during pregnancy may cause mental retardation and other birth defects."

"Alcohol kills at least three times as many Americans than crack, heroin and all other [illegal] drugs combined," said Rep. Joseph Kennedy, sponsor of the legislation. "But, despite the known dangers, this drug is sold by . . . ads that only tell one side of the story."

"How about the Michelob Light ad that tells Americans `You can have it all?' " the Massachusetts Democrat asked the House Energy and Commerce Committee's hazardous materials subcommittee. "What it doesn't tell them is that there are 18 million adults and 4.5 million kids who tried to have it all and are now alcoholics."
