SOUTH TAKES ALL-STAR WIN

The South got two doubles and an inside-the-park home run from Gary Scott and clutch pitching from an unlikely reliever Wednesday night to pull out a 5-4 victory over the North in the Carolina League All-Star baseball game.

The North rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Salem Buccaneers third baseman Bruce Schreiber, but the game took a bizarre turn in the inning.

With Salem designated hitter Chris Estep batting, the plate umpire called time while Rob Poissant was about to deliver a pitch. The South pitcher stopped in the middle of his motion and injured his throwing arm in the process. He made another pitch, which Estep fouled off, but had to leave the game.

With no other pitchers available, the South turned to Peninsula designated hitter Lem Pilkinton, usually an infielder. Pilkinton struck out Estep and finished the game to earn the victory.

Scott, voted the game's Most Valuable Player, led off the 10th with a double off losing pitcher Mike Gardella. Scott, a third baseman for Winston-Salem, then stole third as Brian Johnson struck out. After Pilkinton walked, Bret Boone grounded to short as Scott scored.

\ BUCSHOTS: Four Salem hitters saw action - Schreiber knocked in a run in his only at-bat, Estep was 1-for-4 and scored a run, Mandy Romero went 1-for-3 and Darwin Pennye was 0-for-4. Both Bucs pitchers in the game struggled: Paul Miller worked one inning, giving up three hits and one run and striking out two, and Mike Pomeranz pitched an inning, allowing one hit, one walk and two runs.
