ENDORSING WILDER WAS PAPER'S BIG BOO-BOO

YOU REALLY made a boo-boo last fall when you gave your reason for endorsing Wilder in the governor's race. The first two sentences of your editorial Oct. 29, 1989, read:

"When the people on Nov. 7 choose their next governor, they are entitled to ask whether the man who will lead them into the 1990s has ambitions for them and for their state, or primarily for himself. On that score, we believe that Douglas Wilder deserves a majority of Virginians' votes."

This was the only reason you gave for your endorsement, and you frankly admitted both candidates were well-qualified to be governor.

If you are not disappointed in your candidate, you should be. Since taking office only six months ago, he has traveled from California to New Hampshire, from Minneapolis to New Orleans and points in between, using his office to promote his national image. All of the political experts agree. Even The Washington Post published a critical news story June 25 stating that his travels are widely seen as an attempt to position himself for national office in 1996, if not 1992.

U.S. News & World Report stated many observers see his travels as a not-so-subtle effort to seek the vice presidency or perhaps the presidency.

His Excellency, the governor, is riding high these days. He is also flying high with his friend on state-owned aircraft at the expense of the taxpayers. Shame on him. His friend has enough money to buy and operate a dozen helicopters for their personal use. W.G. AMMEN ROANOKE
