LaPierre has been around Legion baseball for some 25 years, and the 1990 season is by far his most satisfying and the most challenging.
"We have a field of 10 teams in the district, by far a record," LaPierre said. "We call it the Blue Ridge District because we include several actual Legion District boundaries. We extend from Giles County to Danville. And the beauty of it all is the fact that all the teams get along so well. They seem to really like one another."
There are three teams sponsored by Roanoke Legion Post 3 - Roanoke South, Roanoke North, and Roanoke West. Other teams are Bath County, Tri-Counties, Danville, Giles County, Patrick County, Franklin County and Martinsville.
Each of the 10 teams will play an official 18-game district schedule, with home and away games against each of the other nine teams. Play-offs will involve all 10 teams and will begin with four opening round games July 25.
The first and second teams in the regular season will receive first-round byes. Opening games will be No. 3 vs. No. 10, No. 4 vs. No. 9, No. 5 vs. No. 8, and No. 6 vs. No. 7.
In the second round on July 26, the winners of 4 vs. 9 and 5 vs. 8 will meet, as well as winners of 3 vs. 10 and 6 vs. 7. Semifinals July 27 will match the regular season champion against the winners of 4 vs. 5. The No. 2 team will play the winner of 3 vs. 6.
The championship game is set July 27 for Salem Municipal Field, which is the official host for the tourney. However, some opening round games will be played at other area fields. Should the tourney winner not be the season winner, a playoff game will be held to decide the District entry in the state tourney that opens Aug. 8 in Fairfax.
