RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. DR. GREGORY ADKINS has begun his ministry at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. He comes from South Boston with his wife, Denise, and two children, Kirk and Lindsey. Adkins received his basic theological education at Asbury Seminary and has a doctor of ministry degree from Candler Seminary. He has served other pastorates in Brunswick, Chesterfield and Fairfax counties.

\ DENISE HUFFMAN, lay pastor of Lawrence Memorial United Methodist Church of Bent Mountain, will begin Duke University's school of theology in August. Huffman, who seeks ordination as a United Methodist elder, will continue to serve the Roanoke County church on a student pastor basis.

\ JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., is celebrating the eighth anniversary of the coming of the Rev. J. Eugene Young as pastor. Speakers tonight and Friday at 7:30 are, respectively, E.T. Burton and R.R. Wilkinson. Sunday's 11 a.m. preacher will be Aaron Wade. The Rev. James Cobbins and the choir of Peaceful Baptist Church of Lynchburg will lead worship at 4 p.m.

\ SLATE HILL BAPTIST CHURCH will be host Saturday to the Missionary Baptist District Bible School Convention beginning at 8:30 p.m.

\ VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL will be in session July 30 through Aug. 3 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4608 Brambleton Ave. S.W. Two divisions are planned for the 6:30-8:45 p.m. school - for teens and adults and for children 5 through 11. Call 989-0104 for more information.

\ CAVE SPRING BAPTIST CHURCH, 4873 Brambleton Ave. S.W., has scheduled two family seminars on Sunday nights. "Ministering to the Terminally Ill," led by Linda Bryant of Roanoke Memorial Hospital's Hospice, will be Sunday at 5:30 p.m. "Ministering to Dysfunctional and Co-Dependent Families" led by Denny Honaker of Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg, will be Aug. 15 at 6:15 p.m. Call 989-6136 for more information.

\ THE NEW SOUTH SINGERS, a 14-member youth choir on an international tour, will perform Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army center, 724 Dale Ave. S.E. The program is free.

\ CHRISTIAN COMEDIAN MIKE WARNKE, who crusades as an entertainer against the doctrines of Satanism, will perform July 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center. The concert is free but a donation is requested. Call 362-0511. The program is sponsored by a coalition of evangelical Christian youth leaders known as EYLA.
