RELIGION BRIEFS

FIRST CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN has chosen the Rev. Michael D. Chandler as its next pastor. Chandler, 40, now is the part-time minister of Trinity Church of the Brethren in Botetourt County.

The former Californian will succeed the Rev. Paul Alwine, who recently retired after a 22-year pastorate. The prospective pastor, married to the former Sherry R. LaRue of Bassett, was educated at the University of California and the California Graduate School of Theology, Human Relations and Biblical Studies. He came to Virginia three years ago.

The Chandler family includes Aaron, 13; and Rachel, 8.

\ TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, BUCHANAN, has a new rector, the Rev. Sally Dover, who is sharing her appointment with Christ Episcopal of Buena Vista. Dover, whose official title is cluster mentor of the two small parishes, comes from the Pottsville area of Eastern Pennsylvania. She is living in Buena Vista and commuting to Buchanan on Wednesdays and Fridays.

She entered the ministry after being a homemaker and librarian and was ordained to the priesthood in 1987 after studies at Cedar Crest College and Virginia Theological Seminary. For the past three years, she has had a shared ministry in four small Pennsylvania congregations.

\ MISSION90, a national program to increase both spiritual and numerical growth in parishes of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is being launched at Trinity Church in the Williamson Road area. During small group meetings starting this month the congregation will focus on such outreach ministries as its Thrift Shop, which channels funds from the sale of used clothing and household needs into donations for service agencies.

\ JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W. is celebrating the eighth anniversary of the coming of the Rev. J. Eugene Young as pastor. Speakers tonight and Friday at 7:30 are, respectively, E.T. Burton and R.R. Wilkinson. Sunday's 11 a.m. preacher will be Aaron Wade. The Rev. James Cobbins and the choir of Peaceful Baptist Church of Lynchburg will lead worship at 4 p.m.

\ SLATE HILL BAPTIST CHURCH will be host Saturday to the Missionary Baptist District Bible School Convention beginning at 8:30 p.m.

\ THE NEW SOUTH SINGERS, a 14-member youth choir on an international tour, will perform Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army center, 724 Dale Ave. S.E. The program is free.

\ CHRISTIAN COMEDIAN MIKE WARNKE, who crusades as an entertainer against the doctrines of Satanism , will perform July 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center. The concert is free but a donation is requested. Call 362-0511. The program is sponsored by a coalition of evangelical Christian youth leaders known as EYLA.
