Cave Spring Red Sox win title in Division I

\ The Cave Spring Red Sox recently won the Cave Spring American Major Little League championship.

The team, which is coached by Fred Duncan, also won the National League tournament to become Division I champion.

The Cave Spring Minor Red Sox also won their league championship. The team is coached by Kip Connelly.

Cave Spring varsity wins cheering awards

\ The varsity cheerleading squad from Cave Spring High School won several awards at Universal Cheerleading Camp, held recently at Virginia Tech.

The squad won first place overall in the cheer and sideline competitions, a gold superior ribbon in the pompon competition, a spirit stick and several superior blue ribbons during the week.

5K, 10K distance runs scheduled in Salem\ The Salem Parks and Recreation Department and Southwest Virginia Savings & Loan Association will sponsor the 16th annual City of Salem 5K and 10K Distance Runs Aug. 25.

Both races will begin at 8:30 a.m. in front of Brown Hardware on Main Street. The entry fee of $7 includes a T-shirt and a sports bottle. The event is open to all ages.
